He has authored or co-authored numerous articles in the professional transplant literature and has presented regularly at regional and national professional meetings.

Working together with two other Visante consultants, also associated with The University of Utah Hospital and Clinics, he was instrumental in the establishment of specialty pharmacy services. The initial focus was to support the needs of solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients and then later expanded for use with all specialty patient populations.

Throughout his career, Lonnie has remained active with the University of Utah College of Pharmacy fulfilling a number of teaching and precepting responsibilities as a Clinical Assistant Professor and has served on the Admissions Committee for the last 10 years. He considers one of his greatest professional achievements to be his work as Residency Program Director of the University’s Post Graduate Year-2 Transplant Pharmacy program.  As preceptor, his goal is to provide a well-rounded experience covering all aspects of pharmacy related to solid organ transplant.

As Manager for the Department of Solid Organ Transplant, Dr. Smith oversees a multidisciplinary healthcare team comprised of transplant pharmacists, nurse coordinators, social workers, financial coordinators and many others charged with the care of heart, lung, liver and kidney transplant patients as well as ventricular assist device patients.  He has the distinction of being the only pharmacist in the United States to serve as manager of a solid organ transplant program.

Lonnie Smith received a B.S. in Biology from the Tennessee Technological University and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Memphis.  He completed his pharmacy practice residency at the University of Utah Hospital & Clinics and is a Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator (CCTC).  Professional memberships include the American Society of Transplantation serving on the Transplant Pharmacist Community of Practice, where he was on the first executive committee, Transplant Administrators Community of Practice, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, actively participating in the Immunology/Transplantation PRN.  He is also a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
