Fred Massoomi (PharmD, RPh, BCSCP, FASHP) is a researcher, educator, and crusader for proper hazardous drug management and the safe disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
Fred was the Pharmacy Operations Coordinator for the Nebraska Methodist Health System (NMHS) in Omaha for nearly 20 years. In this position he was responsible for the oversight of the Nebraska Methodist Hospital Pharmacy Department, Methodist Easterbrook Infusion Center Pharmacy, Methodist Women’s Hospital Pharmacy, Methodist Home Infusion Services, and the Midwest Surgical Hospital Pharmacy Services. Utilizing a broad range of experiences, Fred led the NMHS team to decentralization of clinical services, establishing a closed drug formulary, establishing computerized pharmacy clinical programs to support the clinical team, automated dispensing and automating inventory management process. Additionally, he has overseen the updating of a pharmacy department to current practice standards as defined by American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <795>, <797>, and <800>.
In honor of his promotion of the practice of pharmacy as a service to public health education and safety, Fred was honored as the Health-System Pharmacist of the Year by the Nebraska Pharmacists Association. He was also recognized by the United Way as Health-System Volunteer of the Year for his work with emergency preparedness for Omaha and all of the state of Nebraska. In 2009 he gave testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife as a panel member for a presentation on “Overdose: How Drugs and Chemicals in Water Supplies and the Environment are Harming our Fish and Wildlife.”
Fred has lectured nationally on implementation strategies for compliance with USP <797> and USP <800>, proper hazardous drug management as outlined in the Centers for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Alert, and proper disposal of hazardous drug waste as outline by the Environmental Protection Agency's Resource and Conservation Act of 1976.
Through numerous presentations and publications, Fred has shared his passion for the practice of pharmacy with the goal of promoting the important role that individual pharmacists play in public safety.
His specialties include hospital pharmacy management, key USP chapters (<795>, <797> and <800>), NIOSH hazardous drug compliance, pharmaceutical waste regulations, infectious diseases, and pharmacy automation.
Fred Massoomi received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. He completed one year of an ACCP Infectious Disease and Pharmacokinetics Fellowship; at Université Laval Laboratoire de Pharmacocinétique in Québec City, Québec Canada. Following this, he completed an ACCP Pharamcokinetics residency at Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
