Karen Riley is a Visante Senior Consultant with pharmacy degrees and certifications in both Canada and the United States. In addition to her work with Visante, she is Medication Therapy Management Pharmacy Specialist for the Sarnia Lambton Area in Ontario. She has consulted in both Canada and the US.
As a consultant pharmacist for various organizations providing pharmaceutical care to patients in the community, she created a new Medication Therapy Management program, as well as disease state management programs for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues. In addition, she developed and implemented programs for anticoagulation protocols including point of care INR testing, an immunization program, and a protocol for weight loss management.
Previously, Dr. Riley was Regional Clinical Pharmacy Manager of Education & Quality Assurance at Hôpital Hotel Dieu Grace & Windsor Regional Hospital. In this position, she had clinical oversight for 40 pharmacists across the two hospitals. She was responsible for the educational development of staff pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to ensure that best practices were being presented for use. She developed new clinical programs and a pharmacy residency program while also helping to recruit and secure advanced-degree pharmacists to staff both institutions.
Before this, Karen was Clinical Pharmacy Practice Leader for 17 years at Bluewater Health in Sarnia, Ontario. In this position, she was the Internal Medicine pharmacist and part of a multi-disciplinary team conducting rounds in medicine, cardiology, and ICU. She gained experience as an oncology pharmacist, pharmacist consultant for outpatient psychogeriatrics, clinical nutrition and the diabetes education program.
Karen Riley received a Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) with High Honors from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BSc Phm) from the University of Toronto. She is a Board Certified Pharmaceutical Specialist (BCPS), Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP), Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP), and a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). She has contributed numerous papers to the professional literature and presented her research findings at various professional meetings. She currently serves on the Ontario College of Pharmacists Council.
